Abstract:

Few studies have been conducted concerning the influence of acupuncture on muscle function. The present study investigated the possible effect of acupuncture in decreasing functional muscular distortion by evaluating the Dynamic Lumbar Paraspinal (LP) EMG activity. Acupuncture stimulation was administered to the lumbar regions of subjects who had displayed greater than 20% percentage difference between left and right Dynamic LP EMG activity during a pre-test. A significant reduction in LP EMG asymmetry was observed immediately after the acupuncture stimulation (exact p=0.049). The results suggest that acupuncture may be beneficial for decreasing functional muscular distortion and improving synergistic coordination.
